Street Party

The party starts at 7:30pm on the 31st of December

When the clock strikes midnight the sky shall be lit up by an incredible firework display and the sounds of world-famous Mark Ronson. This is not an event to be missed!

Ceilidh under the Castle

Celebrations Kick off at 8:30pm on the 31st of December

Edinburgh, The City of Festivals

Edinburgh is very proud to be the world’s leading city of festivals.

This is great news for you, as a guest to the city, you can enjoy culture and festivities all year round. Read on to find out how to make the most of your visit.

Last year across our annual calendar of festivals we had a whopping 3,000+ events, 25,000+ performers, 4.5 million global attendees visiting from 70 countries. There’s never a dull day!

Start your year with a BANG at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay:

(30th of December to the 1st of January)

Hogmanay is a celebration loved and celebrated wildly. The traditions come from far and wide and range from Street Parties, Torchlight Processions, Live music and Ceilidhs. Each of the traditions are designed to wave goodbye to one year and start a new one fresh faced, on the right foot (and most likely hungover).

Top up your dopamine levels at the Edinburgh Science Festival:

(4th of April to the 19th of April)

Taking place at museums, galleries and public spaces, the Science Festival offers an exciting array of activities and exhibitions on all things science. Much of the festivals programming caters for all ages of fascinated minds. This festival is rich with experiences which vary from being hands-on and interactive to discussions which broaden outlook and spark debate.

Unlock your inner child at the International Children’s Festival:

(20th of May to the 31st of May)

This festival is annually-anticipated by locals and is made up of world-class theatre, specially selected for families to enjoy. The  International Children’s Festival programme is vibrant, energic, and a great way for children to stretch their imagination.

Appreciate the silver screen at the International Film Festival:

(17th of June to the 28th of June)

Starting in 1947, the film festival is the world’s longest running film festival. Fuelled by passion for all things cinema the festival is world-renowned for discovering new talent and heralding changes in the cinema scene.  The festival often draws in big names from on screen and behind the camera alike.

Keep it Jazzy at the Jazz & Blues Festival

(10th of July to the 19th of July)

This festival offers a fantastic opportunity for music-lovers to enjoy all things jazz and blues. The diversity of this music scene is shown and celebrated throughout a variety of venues which host both local and established musicians. The festival also features a colourful New Orleans Mardi Gras, this open-air event draws in large crowds gathered in unison to watch the parade.

Have an art attack at Edinburgh’s Art Festival:

(25th of July to the 25th of August)

This festival celebrates art in all its forms and flavours. With 50 Exhibitions around the city displaying the works of over 300 artists this event represents the very best of visual art. If the idea of discovering the newest talent side-by-side alongside some of the most prominent works of known artists, then this is one for you.

Take a leap off the world’s greatest platform for creative freedom at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe:

(2nd of August to the 26th of August)

Diversity. Creative Freedom. Inclusivity. Three fundamental philosophies that are echoed throughout the Fringe Fest. It’s fair to say that the fringe offers something for everyone and plenty that can be enjoyed by all. Our capital boasts the title and reputation as the Worlds biggest celebration of the arts and thousands of performers flock to the city to put on a show. The Fringe offers a wave of dance, comedy, theatre, events, opera, music and thought-provoking poetry. The city is never more alive than it is when the Fringe madness kicks in.

Be a citizen of the world at the International Festival:

(2nd of August to the 26th of August)

This is the festival which originally founded the annual calendar of festivals which Edinburgh celebrates. Come to the International Festival to experience the height of artistic expression.

Enrich yourself in Scottish Culture and Pride at the Royal Military Tattoo:

(2nd of August to the 24th of August)

An unmissable world showcase of military performances, which has strong Scottish roots. It is no surprise that the event has been running for 7 Decades as the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, as audiences gather in their thousands to Edinburgh Castle to celebrate global traditions, pride, unity and belonging.

Book yourself off from work to attend the International Book Festival:

(10th of August to the 26th of August)

If you relish a good book then you’ll want to attend the largest public celebration of the written word, right? Every August Edinburgh welcomes a 1000 writers to gather with their audiences over a common love of books and stories. This festival is well suited for all ages and welcomes families.

Be immersed in the narrative at the Scottish International Story Telling Festival:

(18th of October to the 31st of October)

This festival was originally inspired by a traditional Scottish ceilidh and how it can bring a sense of unity amongst a crowd of strangers. Now in the present day the festival brings a mixture of Scots and their international counterparts to celebrate the diversity of story telling, in all its mediums. All events seek to engage the audience in in the magic of live story telling and transport the audience between worlds using the art of spoken word.

Enjoy the festive festivities at Edinburgh’s Christmas:

(16th of November to the 4th of January)

Enjoy the festive festivities at the Christmas Market in Edinburgh. Each year Edinburgh pulls out all the stops to create a winter wonderland of ice skating, streets filled with bright lights, street food, amusements and (my personal favourite) mulled wine.

Top 10 Tips for Your Stay in Edinburgh

No one knows Edinburgh quite like the locals do, so take it from us, we’ve got the best tips for making the most of your stay in the capital.

Go high for the best views

Whilst the view of Edinburgh from the castle is great, a view with the castle in it is even better.  For the more energetic among you, a climb up Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park will undoubtedly give you spectacular views.  Alternatively a climb up Calton Hill will give you brilliant views of the castle along Princes Street.  If you’re not feeling quite so energetic then make your way to the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street and head to the rooftop garden where you can almost reach out and touch the castle!

Breathe in the fresh air in one of the many city centre parks and gardens

Edinburgh is the UK’s greenest city so make the most of the wonderful parks on offer.  Not to be missed are the Princes Street Gardens.  Sitting in the old moat of the castle, the gardens offer an escape from busy Princes Street as well as a spectacular view of the castle.  The gardens even feature their own bear!

@destinationedinburgh

Watch out for the One O’Clock Gun

Keep your wits about you if you’re anywhere near the castle at 1pm Monday to Saturday.  In a tradition spanning over 150 years, a canon is fired to mark 1pm, frightening many unsuspecting tourists.  Originally fired to alert docked ships in Leith and on the Firth of Forth of the time, it’s now just a lovely attraction to the castle.

Planning in advance is key

To make the most of your time in the city, our best advice is to plan ahead.  If checking off the top tourist attractions is your priority then buying a Royal Edinburgh ticket in advance is a must.  Included in the ticket is entry to the Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Yacht Britannia, Palace of Holyrood House and Edinburgh Bus Tours.  We can sort one out for you, just let our team know and we’ll have the tickets ready for you on arrival.

Be prepared for glorious sunshine, thunderous rain and then more sunshine …

Scotland is typically known for its weather, not exactly the warmest of places but it is known for surprising its residents with all seasons in one day.  So be prepared and follow our advice: bring your rain jacket or buy yourself a poncho!

Go off the beaten track

@glorydays.edinburgh

Some of the best places and sights in Edinburgh are further away from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street and the old town.  We’d recommend a walk along the Water of Leith, where you can take photos of Dean Village, then wander along to Stockbridge Market for lunch, or continue further down to Leith for a fantastic selection of award-winning restaurants including The Kitchin.

Get your bearings and map it out

Edinburgh is a very pedestrian friendly city but it can be easy to get lost.  Make yourself familiar with where your apartment is and the bus routes nearby so that you will always find your way home.  All out apartments have maps available for guests so make sure to take one with you when you go exploring.

Jump on a Lothian bus

Edinburgh has a fantastic bus network spanning the city so definitely make use of them when exploring the capital.  It’s just £1.70 for an adult flat fayre and £4 for a day ticket which gives you unlimited access all day.  Keep in mind that the buses don’t give change, and if you’re staying for longer it might be worthwhile downloading the app (the minimum top up for the app is £10).  Check out timetables and routes here

Do as the locals do and eat brunch

There is no shortage of delightful places to have brunch in the city, take advantage of Southpour, next door to our Southside apartments and receive 20% off when you show your apartment key or a Destination Edinburgh Apartments business card.
